Filmfools Blogpost #1

This past year (2018) has been a hectic one in Hollywood following the wake of the Harvey Weinstein fall.  The actions of others has been brought up, and social media posts have haunted people ranging from a Brewer's reliever to some of Hollywood's highest-paid directors.  This past summer, James Gunn, director of The Guardians of the Galaxy films, was fired for posts he made in the past.

Read the following article found here, then comment on the controversy.  Was the firing the correct thing to do or not?  Defend your position.

I feel that it is unfair to punish someone for their actions so long after it was done. Usually, I feel comments on things like race, gender, and sexuality are products of ignorance. Honestly, I feel that is forgivable. However, crude jokes of rape are plainly indecent. Personally, I feel his apology is not because it was said but because he is being penalized for what was said. Hence, his apology isn’t sincere. Had he apologized or owned up to his mistakes before dealing with the backlash of what Gunn posted on social media, he would seem much more genuine. But I feel his apology is just a sad attempt to get his position back. Nothing more, and nothing less.

I feel like i can argue both sides of the story. I think instead of just taking quick action, they should have just investigated the incident more. I can see why they fired him because it was causing a lot of controversy online and maybe even for them. If they have certain policies or regulations that they want for their employees, that's fine to me. I just feel like people can change and if he apologized for it and learned from his mistakes and hasn't made a comment like that since the time he made those tweets, then its okay. He is human and we all mistakes that we are supposed to grow and learn from.

I feel like Marvel was wrong and they shouldn't have fired him. Although his post may have been wrong and Marvel doesn't approve, James Gunn, has directed both of the movies and they both were very successful. I would have addressed Gunn about the post and expressed my concerns and feelings, but I wouldn't have ended the business relationship. For the success of the company, I would have allowed James to continue directing the film.

My response to the article is that i think that the firing process was unnecessary. James Gunn sincerely apologized for his actions and took full responsibility for what he had done by accepting, understanding, and committing to equality. Not only that, but James Gunn's offending tweets occurred before his career as the director took off and that Disney most likely was aware of his past controversies.

I agree with what happened to the director because what you do in the dark will always come to the light. I do find it true that your past does affect your future. Even though he could have and an honest mistake with his tweets everything you say and do o the internet will be their forever. He is not the only person that this has happened to many famous people got fired because of something they said. He made a mistake and now he has to pay for it, you just have to be careful what you post on the internet.

I do not think that firing was the correct stance for Marvel Studios to take on this matter. James Gunn does not deserve to be fired because of a few reasons, the most important among them being that we all make mistakes and none of us are perfect. Now, should James have posted these inappropriate jokes online? definitely not, but that does not mean that he should still be punished for his past words four to five years later. This is especially true since he has said publicly and at multiple times that he regrets what he said, he knows that the jokes were inappropriate, and he has changed his ways since then. Marvel Studios should have realized that these tweets that were brought to the media’s attention, were done so in an attack on James Gunn and his career, character, accomplishments, and public figure. The people that do this do not do so because they are truly concerned that James may put some of these inappropriate jokes or messages into his movies, they do this because they want to attack James Gunn and make money off other people’s downfall. Keep in mind that this was all done before James had joined Marvel’s team and was something, he had done quite a few years back. Also remember that these are jokes that James had made, therefore, due to the definition of a joke, he does not truly believe these things.

I firmly believe that James Gunn's firing was unjust. Theses posts that has been brought up are from at least 10 years ago. They were related to his previous profession. He made movies that were edgy and he looked at himself as a provocateur. That came along with the offensive jokes. Now that they're brought to the light doesn't call for him losing his job. I'm sure Disney and Marvel were aware of these posts but it was the posts becoming to the light pressured them to let James go. James had a similar situation back in 2012 but he apologized and everyone moved past it. So it's really confusing to me now that they decided to fire him knowing that this happened all those years ago. I feel like Gunn should have his job right now.

I do not think it was right for them to fire him. I feel like it was said in the past and he could've matured in these last couple of years. Unless he is showing that he still jokes about things like that. I am not defending what he said at all and if he made those tweets recently, I would feel like he should be fired, but I just don’t think it is fair that he got punished for something he said almost a decade ago.

I feel that he knew what he was doing even thought he said sorry he still knew how some people feel about the topics that he made a joke about so I feel that it was right he good fired because talking about something that some people go through really makes then feel bad or feel different types of ways about them self this as well makes people think different about him so I feel that yes it was right he got fired it will show him that somethings are to not be said.

Was the firing right in my opinion? Yes and no, I say yes because pedophilia and rape aren’t things a person should joke about, especially on social media. I also say no because these tweets are almost 10 years old and maybe he has changed from the person he was 10 years ago in a positive way. So, if I was in the position of Marvel, I would have left the past behind and moved on to bigger and better things. So, all in all was firing Gunn a good choice? I would say no because he directed Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 and both of those movies were very successful so Marvel firing, he could lose the company some money if the new director isn't as talented as James Gunn.

The firing of James Gunn to work on The Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was the incorrect thing to do. Fans of The Guardians of the Galaxy films were outraged when past offensive tweets from James Gunn resurfaced the internet. Gunn’s tweets sparked controversy on whether Marvel should or should not fire him as the director of the films. The tweets were made between the year 2009 to 2012, where Gunn has not yet become a filmmaker for Marvel Studios. Before the tweets were resurfaced in 2018, Gunn has already apologized for them. Gunn has not made any provocative tweets after the year 2012, which shows that he is not the same person as before and how his morals have changed.

In this case I feel that the firing was the right thing to do for a couple of reasons. James Gunn should have addressed the situation a long time of go. People like him who are known for something or in the industry like he is are always being watched, even if it was from the past. Just to be on the safe side he should have apologized for it so that it wouldn’t catch up to him. Marvel did what they felt was right because the comments that were made were on topics of rape, but in a joking matter. That doesn’t sit well with people when someone take something so seriously so lightly and as if it a joke. I completely agree with their decision because I feel that they just wanted it to be clear that they did not condone his behavior or comments and strongly disagree. People don’t want to be behind someone who does something so sick as to joke around about such soft topics for people in the world. I don’t feel like Marvel made a bad decision at all I feel like there decision was responsible and the right choice. Hopefully this teaches others to think before they joke about serious topics like that. This should teach people how your name, and reputation does matter and even something from the past can catch up to you and ruin all of that.

I feels as if Gunn shouldn’t have been fired. It was in the past, yes he made a mistake by making some rather offensive tweets, but it was from 2009 to 2012. This is exactly why you should be very cautious about what what you post because everything on the internet can resurface, but was still a mistake. People have to understand he was young at the time and he’s grown ever since 2009. I just feel that he shouldn’t be penalized for a mistake made almost ten years ago. This situation is the same as the recent Kevin Hart situation regarding him not being able to host the Oscars Awards show. He made a few jokes towards the LGBT community back in 2019. Now he’s being punished for it, they made some mistakes who hasn’t. But the important thing is wether or not he learned from it. Isaiah 43:18-19 18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Meaning forget the past and don’t dwell on it Learn from it and move on don’t hold on or swear the small stuff and focus and the future and how bright it will get. If you continue to work at it and stay on the right path.

I don’t think they should have fired him from the job from some tweets that long ago he was young and was in the right mind. I’m not saying he is right for saying something like that in the first place, but he was young and didn’t know it could come back to him. So, what they did I don’t believe it was the right thing most people would leave that in the past and not even worry about it. There was no reason for the people to be searching all on his account for old things that they have no business looking for not all people are perfect they will say some things that won’t be liked once again what he said was dumb, but it was so long ago that they shouldn’t penalize him in the future.

I feel like it was wrong to fire him for the actions that he provided. Although he hurt many feelings, he still should've never gotten fired. No one is perfect and he probably just did what came to his mind. He apologized for it and that is all that matters, because all those people who were offended, are probably able to forgive him and enjoy his movies. Although rape is a serious topic in this world he should be forgiven.
