Filmfools #2: Hugo & Georges Méliès

Hugo is the only film made by auteur director Martin Scorsese that is not rated 'R'. He made it for two reasons: he wanted to make a film his children would be able to see and enjoy, and Georges Méliès was an inspiration to him, so he wanted to honor him.  In Meredith Woerner's "What Martin Scorsese's Hugo Taught Us About the Grandfather of Science Fiction Film, Georges Méliès", she outlines some of the main areas of Méliès's life that Scorsese covered.

I did not know that Méliès was the father of science fiction films and the first person to start using “special effects”. I did not think it would even be possible during the early 1900’s to have special effects and to be able to make movies like he did. I am also surprised at how much dedication he put into his work. From the article, it seems that he must have been living and breathing his movies. He had to had paint every single frame for his color films, and he was creating all his costumes and set pieces. Lastly, it surprised me that his films would go out of fashion at all, his films were later sold for silver and used to make boots, which is inconceivable when we think about that today.

The three surprising things I learned about Georges Méliès is 1. That he made a glass studio outside of Paris for better lighting it’s surprising because it's difficult to get lighting in old movies back then so him doing that is what makes a lot of movies better than they were. 2. Is Georges color films were painted all of them and that Is surprising because it takes time to paint color for a whole hour movie. 3. It is surprising that he did all the stunts on his own stunts are a dangerous thing and to see someone so dedicated to their movie that they do the stunts on their own is amazing.

Reading the article about Georges Melies, the grandfather of science fiction films, made me learn 3 surprising things. Melies was an extremely passionate worker as a director because he made over 500 films, which shows how energetic he was with his films. He tries hard to make his films appear the best they can by creating his studio out of glass, so he can use all the light to create his films, and he built his own props. Melies films with color were hand painted by him and his crews for every single frame, which was a time-consuming task. The films made by Melies proved how he is considered the grandfather of science fiction films.

From reading the article and studying more about the work of Georges Méliès I learned things about him that I didn’t know so here are three surprising things about Méliès.
    Méliès Made Over 500 Films
He created 0ver 500 silent films that he put together, starred in, directed and even made costumes for them, but over time the silent films got lost over time for difference reasons because of how long ago it was misfortune. I feel that it’s amazing how he worked hard on his career and even when he had to do it himself it’s just sad how they got lost.
    Méliès built many automatons
In the movie hugo we get to see this little boy type of design that he made I’ve seen robots and things like that but he started making films years ago. To be able to see one of the many creatures that he made it really shows how creative he was he was so talented and worked with the little technology he had and created something so amazing. The fact that something like the one that I seen it can move and write.
    He did his own stunts
We all know that doing stunts in movies or anywhere can be dangerous which is why people have stunt doubles but he wanted to them himself. That shows how he was real in all he did and wanted to be hand own in his work. His films were real that’s why he was so well known and recognized.
All of these are something that make me surprised about what him because you don’t see people like that anymore that are so dedicated to there work, willing to put all the time that he did shows a lot.

Just from reading this, I could tell Melies was hard worker because he made many films he made. He was very determined and dedicated to his work and his work ethinicity was extremely high. He wasn't scared to try his own stunts he wanted more than anything. Ecspecially when technology wasn't the best he still had his own special effects so that shows a lot.

From reading this article about George Melies i learned a lot about him and his past accomplishments. Here are three facts about George Melies that surprised me. 1. To make colored films Melies and his crew had to individually paint each frame. This caught my eye because that looks and sounds like many hours of hard work just to add color. 2. He designed and built many automatons. 3 . He did his own stunts in his movies which is pretty cool.
